Program Overview

Objectives:

  • Support collaborative research projects between UK-based researchers and Luxembourg-based researchers within the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and Fonds National de la Recherche (FNR) remit.
  • Enable arts and humanities researchers to establish or enhance effective working relationships with fellow researchers, practitioners, and beneficiaries both within and beyond the UK and Luxembourg.
  • Provide career development opportunities for less experienced researchers through collaboration with senior researchers.
  • Maximise research impact by promoting communication, dissemination, and knowledge transfer beyond academia.
  • Encourage interdisciplinary collaborations within arts and humanities or between arts and humanities and other disciplines, with arts and humanities leading the research questions and methods.

Target Beneficiaries:

  • UK researchers actively engaged in postdoctoral research with a doctorate or equivalent experience, affiliated with AHRC-eligible UK research organisations.
  • Luxembourg researchers from FNR-eligible institutions such as public research centres, University of Luxembourg, and authorised public bodies.
  • Project co-leads including international researchers based outside the UK and Luxembourg.
  • Collaborative teams involving multiple institutions, disciplines, sectors, and countries.

Application Process:

  • Applications must be submitted via the UKRI Funding Service; Je-S system is not used.
  • The project lead must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for AHRC funding.
  • The full economic cost (FEC) of the UK-hosted element must be between £300,000 and £1.5 million; AHRC funds 80% of this.
  • Luxembourg costs are funded by FNR through their system and must be justified separately.
  • Applications undergo eligibility checks, expert independent review (minimum two supportive reviews required), applicant response stage, and panel moderation.
  • Assessment criteria include vision, approach, team capability, ethics and responsible research, and cost justification.
  • The maximum project duration is five years, with projects starting at least nine months after application submission.
  • No closing date; applications are accepted continuously with regular decision points.

Key Features:

  • Joint funding by AHRC (UK) and FNR (Luxembourg) under a lead agency agreement.
  • Funding covers research costs for UK and Luxembourg partners separately, with clear budget differentiation.
  • Support for project co-lead internationals, with specific funding caps and eligibility rules.
  • Commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion, and flexible working arrangements.
  • Emphasis on trusted research and innovation principles to ensure ethical and secure international collaboration.
  • No support for project studentships (PhD funding).
  • Applicants encouraged to follow career development and technician support frameworks.
  • Formal collaboration agreements required if awarded.
  • Detailed guidance and support available for application preparation and submission.

This funding opportunity fosters high-quality, impactful international research collaboration in arts and humanities between the UK and Luxembourg, supporting a broad range of disciplines and collaborative models.
