Program Overview

Supports professional, non-profit theatre organizations and collectives in Toronto for the creation, production, and presentation of theatre works. The program aims to develop and advance professional theatre in Toronto, with a strong commitment to works by Canadian artists.

Objectives:

  • Support creation, production, and presentation of theatre works.
  • Foster development of professional theatre in Toronto.
  • Encourage works by Canadian artists.
  • Support projects that advance theatre practice and community understanding.

Target Beneficiaries:

  • Incorporated non-profit theatre organizations or unincorporated collectives operating on a not-for-profit basis.
  • Collectives of two or more professional artists, mostly Toronto residents.
  • Projects must take place in the City of Toronto.
  • Professional artists recognized by peers and with a history of public presentation.

Application Process:

  • Applications submitted online via TAC Grants Online portal by deadlines (Feb 3, 2025, and Aug 5, 2025).
  • Projects must occur after June 1 (for Feb deadline) or after Nov 1 (for Aug deadline).
  • Projects must be completed within two years of notification.
  • Applicants may receive only one Theatre grant per calendar year.
  • Contact Theatre Program Manager for eligibility questions or special initiatives.

Key Features:

  • Four funding categories: Full Production (up to $20,000), Production in a Festival (up to $10,000), Workshop (up to $15,000), Special Initiatives (up to $15,000).
  • Funding covers artist fees, production, marketing, administration, childcare, and accessibility costs.
  • Digital platform works are eligible.
  • Does not fund retroactive projects, operating costs, schools, individuals, or projects outside Toronto.
  • Accessibility grants up to $5,000 available for Deaf artists and artists with disabilities.
  • Application support funding available for applicants with disabilities.
