Program Overview

Toronto Arts Council's Open Door Grant Program is a strategic funding opportunity designed to support innovative ideas that have the potential to create transformative change within the arts sector in Toronto. The program encourages projects that demonstrate leadership through innovation, experimentation, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing.

Key objectives:

  • Foster transformative change in the arts sector.
  • Support projects that address sector-wide challenges or opportunities.
  • In 2026, prioritize projects increasing access to affordable cultural space for artists and arts communities, allocating at least 50% of funds to cultural space activation and development.

Target beneficiaries:

  • Incorporated non-profit arts organizations or artist collectives operating on a not-for-profit basis.
  • Located within the City of Toronto (post office boxes are not accepted).
  • Applicants with viable administrative and financial plans.
  • Note: Individuals, educational/religious institutions (unless arts activities are clearly separated), organizations receiving operating funding from the City of Toronto’s Economic Development and Culture Division, and capital projects are not eligible.

Application process:

  • Applications must be submitted online via TAC Grants Online by the deadline (November 26, 2025).
  • Projects must start no earlier than three months after the application deadline and be completed within two years.
  • Applicants are encouraged to consult with the Strategic Programs Manager before applying.
  • Accessibility support is available for Deaf artists and artists with disabilities, including additional funding for accessibility costs and application assistance.

Key features:

  • Funding focuses on strategic, sector-wide impact rather than individual or routine project support.
  • Does not fund operating costs or ongoing staff salaries but allows in-kind contributions.
  • Applicants can receive this grant only once every two years.
  • Provides up to $5,000 additional accessibility funding for eligible projects.
  • Encourages collaboration and knowledge-sharing within the arts community.
  • Offers informational sessions to guide applicants.

This program is part of Toronto Arts Council’s broader mandate to enhance the quality of life in Toronto through the arts by supporting innovative and impactful projects that address current sector needs and opportunities.
