AI SuperConnector

A 6-month intensive startup accelerator program in the UK designed to empower early career researchers (ECRs) to launch AI-driven startups addressing real-world challenges. It is a collaborative initiative involving Imperial College London, University of Liverpool, University of Leeds, and University of York.

Objectives:

• Support ECRs in commercializing AI research into viable startups.
• Equip participants with entrepreneurship fundamentals, AI capabilities, and ethical frameworks.
• Drive innovation in key domains such as sustainability, healthcare, and smart cities.
• Foster economic growth and social progress through AI ventures.

Target Beneficiaries:

• Early Career Researchers including research fellows, postdocs, and late-stage PhD candidates.
• Applicants must have AI technology at proof-of-concept stage or beyond.
• Participants must be affiliated with one of the four partner universities.
• Both institutional and non-institutional IP holders are eligible.
• Postdocs and PhD candidates require approval from their supervisors.

Application Process:

• Competitive application evaluating innovation potential, commercial viability, and team capabilities.
• Panel interviews for shortlisted candidates.
• No application fee; program is fully funded.
• Applications currently closed but typically run annually.

Key Features:

• £20,000 non-dilutive seed funding to accelerate ventures.
• Challenge-based learning with masterclasses on AI systems, IP, business models, and fundraising.
• 1:1 venture building support from experienced founders and investors.
• Access to extensive expert networks and strategic university-corporate partnerships.
• Pitch events to showcase ventures to investors and industry leaders.
• Partnership with Google for Startups Cloud Program providing cloud credits, workshops, and expert support.
• No equity taken by the program; focus on empowering founders.

The program runs from July to December, combining tailored support sessions, networking, and independent venture development, culminating in a pitch showcase event.

It builds on the success of the MedTech SuperConnector program at Imperial College London, aiming to replicate its impact in the AI sector.
