Program Overview

People and Places: Large Grants is a funding program by The National Lottery Community Fund aimed at supporting projects in Wales that work closely with local communities. The program focuses on projects that are accessible and address the most important issues for the community.

Objectives:

  • To fund projects that involve and build on the skills, experiences, and strengths of the community.
  • To fill gaps in existing services or activities within the community.
  • To support projects that help communities come together, enable children and young people to thrive, promote healthier lives, and encourage environmental sustainability.

Target Beneficiaries:

  • Communities defined by shared identity, interest, experience, or geographic location in Wales.
  • Voluntary organizations, community organizations, public sector bodies, registered charities, social enterprises, schools (benefiting local communities), and partnerships of these groups.
  • Projects must primarily benefit people living in Wales.

Key Features:

  • Funding range: £100,001 to £500,000 for up to five years.
  • Can fund new or existing projects, including capital costs like land, buildings, vehicles, or refurbishments.
  • Emphasis on equality, equity, diversity, and inclusion, with a focus on underrepresented groups.
  • Projects must consider environmental impact and promote bilingual delivery in English and Welsh.
  • Support for overheads, staff, training, equipment, transport, volunteer expenses, and one-off events.
  • Excludes funding for retrospective costs, alcohol, loans, fundraising activities, religious content, statutory activities, overseas travel, and profit-making activities.

Application Process:

  • Initial informal chat with a funding officer is mandatory before applying.
  • Eligible applicants submit a short idea form, followed by a detailed application if invited.
  • Applicants must provide organizational details, financial accounts, and comply with safeguarding policies if working with vulnerable groups.
  • Additional documentation required for capital projects (e.g., vehicle quotes, land/building ownership or lease agreements).
  • The decision process takes about 40 weeks from initial contact to funding outcome.
  • Successful applicants receive contract details and payment schedules before project start.

This program aims to empower Welsh communities by funding impactful, inclusive, and sustainable projects that address local needs and priorities.
