Objectives:
- Accelerate the uptake of electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints at state-funded education institutions.
- Support sustainable school travel initiatives, including active travel and public transport.
- Encourage installation of EV infrastructure to facilitate electric vehicle use among staff, visitors, and others.
Target Beneficiaries:
- State-funded schools and education institutions across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
- Academy trusts can apply for up to 40 sockets per institution within the trust.
- Independent schools are not eligible for this specific grant but can apply through other schemes.
- Institutions must have designated off-street parking associated with their premises.
- Must have an existing or future need for EV charging.
- Must not have applied for the same chargepoint under other EV infrastructure grants.
Key Features:
- Provides 75% funding towards the purchase and installation costs of EV chargepoints.
- Maximum funding of £2,500 per socket.
- Maximum of 40 sockets across all sites per institution (including previous Workplace Charging Scheme applications).
- Successful applicants receive a voucher valid for 180 days to complete installation.
- Installation must be done by an authorised installer using eligible commercial chargepoints.
- Chargepoints can be opened to public use, but compliance with Public Chargepoint Regulations 2023 and technical specifications is required.
- Each site must have a minimum power supply of 3kW per socket and no more than one socket per accessible parking space.
- Consideration for accessibility and diverse user needs in chargepoint placement and design.
- Audits may be conducted on installations, including possible site visits.
Application Process:
- Application opens from 5 February 2024 until 31 March 2026.
- Applicants should conduct a site survey with an authorised installer to confirm electrical capacity.
- Online application requires institution details (staff/pupil numbers), institution or SEED reference number, number of chargepoints, number of sites, and plans for public use.
- Multi-academy trusts must apply separately for each institution.
- After approval, applicants receive a voucher code to give to the installer.
- Installer claims the grant on behalf of the institution and deducts it from the invoice.
